What is ETL

The Extract, Transform & Load Process (ETL) is data management strategy developed since 1970’s. It consists in a three-step procedure for data related needs such as Data Integration, Migration, Replication and others. The Extract phase involves the recollection of data from one or several sources. At this phase, data is retained on a temporary storage where the next two phases are going to be executed. During the extraction, the rules of validation of the data configured by the customer specifications are applied to verify if the data is available for the load requirements. Once validated, the next two phases are able to start.

The Transformation phase processes the data to structure and prepare its output and load according to the customer’s data needs. The objective of data transformation is to make this data adequately to the uniform schema needed for a ready-to-use format. Most common transformations include data formats, reclassification of rows or columns of data based on tables and others.
The Load phase places the transformed, cleaned and prepared data in a unique storage, commonly known as Data Warehouse, the load can be On Premise or Off Premise, in other words, local or cloud based storages. Once the data is loaded, the ETL process concludes.
